From 25 October to 21 December 2025, the exhibition hall of Pedvāle International Artist Residency is hosting a solo exhibition by photographer Scott Maracle, titled “Between Steps and Sightlines.”
Scott Maracle is a member of the Mohawk Nation, part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and lives in the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory (Indian reservation) in Ontario, Canada. He belongs to the Turtle Clan, a clan deeply connected to Mother Earth. The people of the Turtle Clan are regarded as guardians of the land, with a responsibility to care for the environment. Therefore, the main themes of Maracle’s photography are nature and the environment, often reflecting the destruction and neglect caused by humankind.
Representatives of the Turtle Clan also serve as a source of knowledge and wisdom within the tribe, passing on experience and providing guidance to future generations. This philosophy is also reflected in Maracle’s artistic approach.
Scott Maracle studied photography at the New York Institute of Photography as well as at the Photography Institute in London, United Kingdom. His photographic style encompasses several genres, including landscape, nature, street photography, architecture, and black-and-white imagery. He works exclusively with natural or available light and embraces a minimalist approach, guided by the principle that less is more.
The exhibition features works from five thematic series: The Reserve: Images from Indian Lands; The Hand of Man; Nature; Humankind; and 858 Steps.
Although human figures are usually absent from Maracle’s work, in this exhibition he includes one of his most recent themes — “Humankind” — featuring images in which people appear as part of the landscape.
One of the exhibition’s central series is “858 Steps”, a collection of black-and-white photographs taken on the artist’s family property in the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. The land has been in his family for more than a hundred years, and most of it remains untouched wilderness. Over the past six years, Maracle has documented this territory through the changing seasons. The title of the project, “858 Steps”, refers to the distance from his front door to the places where the photographs were taken — and back again.
With “Between Steps and Sightlines” Scott Maracle invites viewers to immerse themselves in natural landscapes, to discover unnoticed moments of everyday life, and to reflect on the relationship of people with the environment and the world around us.
